Donovan Votes to Declare ISIS Atrocities "Genocide"
Washington, DC—March 14, 2016….Congressman Dan Donovan (NY-11), a member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and the House Committee on Homeland Security, voted this evening to declare genocide in the Middle East. The vote comes days after Donovan appeared with Christian, Jewish, and Muslim leaders to condemn ISIS’s atrocities and call on Secretary of State John Kerry to define the violence as genocide. Shortly before the vote, Donovan gave an impassioned speech on the House floor (video available here).
Congressman Donovan said, “Armed soldiers are killing, raping, and enslaving Christians and other religious minorities simply because of their faith. The House has spoken. I hope Secretary Kerry has the moral conviction to call this what it is: genocide.”
Reports indicate ISIS has killed religious minorities by the thousands in an effort to impose its perverted ideology on the Middle East. This week, the New York Times documented how ISIS soldiers force birth control on enslaved women to avoid impregnating them during their captivity.
The House unanimously passed the resolution. The European Parliament passed a similar resolution in February. By law, Secretary Kerry has until March 17 to determine whether ISIS’s atrocities constitute genocide.
