Donovan Calls for Aggressive Action to Rid World of ISIS Threat
Washington, DC—November 18, 2015....Congressman Dan Donovan (NY-11) today called for the United States to aggressively combat ISIS to counter the grave threat to innocent civilians across the free world.
Congressman Donovan said, “In the past month, ISIS has brought down a Russian airliner, attacked innocents in Beirut, and slaughtered civilians in Paris. ISIS is not contained. ISIS is not the ‘JV’ squad. They are cold-blooded killers with no regard for human life, including their own. They must be eradicated – period.”
The solution to this grave threat lies in Syria: the world cannot defeat ISIS without taking and holding the ground that ISIS occupies.
Donovan continued, “It’s time we start listening to our generals and allies about what they need to defeat ISIS instead of focusing on what is politically expedient. We need a clear strategy that involves our Arab and Western allies with the express objective of destroying ISIS. Containment is not a strategy. Local allies, including Kurdish militias and Iraqi forces, must capture and hold ISIS territory. The United States and Europe should provide the requisite support – including intelligence, special operations forces, and air power – to get the job done.”
Donovan pointed to Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad, who has slaughtered his own people, including women and children, as a contributing factor in ISIS’s rise. In the past year, Assad has let ISIS leaders out of Syrian prisons, conducted business with ISIS, and created a general atmosphere within which ISIS could rise and thrive.
Donovan concluded, “Assad isn’t the solution to the threat – he’s the cause of it. While our immediate priority should be stopping ISIS, the ultimate answer must also involve a new Syrian government that does not include Bashar al-Assad.”
Congressman Dan Donovan serves on the House Committee on Homeland Security and the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.
